The Gary Area Project focused on political attitudes and orientations through interviews with 800 residents of Gary, Indiana. The survey used probability sampling of Census blocks and block clusters and quota sampling of individuals within blocks. Interview questions gathered data on respondents’ socioeconomic status and other background demographics, measures of relative deprivation, and measures of satisfaction in interpersonal relations. The survey also included items on political participation and attitudes, attitudes about race and race relations, and attitudes about local Gary politics.
