The purpose of the study was to explore a variety of issues at the intersection of family, work, and health. The interview consists of open-ended and close-ended questions. The in-person sample was selected from adults who were recruited on the basis of interest following initial contact through flyers, personal contact, or word-of-mouth (snowball sample). The in-person sample was approximately evenly composed of African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and European-Americans. At the end of the in-person survey, respondents were asked to give the names of up to eight family members who could be asked to participate in a telephone survey including many of the same questions (although a few, especially longer open-ended questions were omitted from the telephone survey).
